A Review of the Watchtower article “Who are Jehovah’s Witnesses?” (Watchtower Sept 2015)

watchtower sept1 2015

Who Are Jehovah’s Witnesses? September 1st 2015.

by James Broughton

In an article which spans five parts, the Watchtower Society appears to invite the reader to form a greater understanding of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Although they already have several brochures and leaflets about themselves, it seems they want this information to gain a wider acceptance by publishing it in the Watchtower magazine.

Who Are Jehovah’s Witnesses? (p.3)

The article begins with some common misunderstandings from a Watchtower point of view  of what JWs are not.

“I had known Mike for years. He is one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. But his religion always baffled me. Who is Jehovah? Why don’t Witnesses celebrate the holidays? Was Mike mixed up in a cult?”—Becky, California, U.S.A.

“When my neighbors started to study the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses, I wondered: ‘What does that name, Jehovah’s Witnesses, mean? What a strange name for a religion!’ ”—Zenon, Ontario, Canada.

“My wife and I thought that Jehovah’s Witnesses called to prey on our guilt feelings because we weren’t at church. And we figured that if the mainline churches didn’t have what we were looking for, a weird sect like Jehovah’s Witnesses couldn’t have it either.”—Kent, Washington, U.S.A.

“I honestly didn’t know who they were and what they stood for.”—Cecilie, Esbjerg, Denmark.

A Review of the January 2015 Watchtower article entitled “Should We Pray to Jesus?”

praying-hands-Pencilby James Broughton

THE WATCHTOWER JANUARY 2015 page 14-15 ‘Should We Pray to Jesus?’

The article begins with a research poll of 800 youths from more than a dozen religious denominations [source not revealed], asking whether they believed that Jesus answers prayers. Over 60 percent said that they firmly believe that he does. However, one youth crossed out the name Jesus on the survey and wrote “God” instead. The question is then posed “What do you think? Should we address our prayers to Jesus or to God? To find the answer, first let us consider how Jesus taught his disciples to pray.”

How to Respond to the Jehovah’s Witness’ Publication “What Does the Bible Really Teach?” — Part Three

What Does the Bible Really Teachby Wilbur Lingle

Chapter 3

What Is God’s Purpose For The Earth?

YOUR main purpose in going through Chapter 3 is to ask thought-provoking  questions about the building of the new earth, so it is best to skip over most of what is written there.

Usually most Jehovah’s Witnesses have not wrestled with any of the details of the process of getting from where we are in this present world to where the new earth becomes a paradise—as has been promised by the Watchtower Society in writing accompanied by many Disney Land-like pictures. 2 Corinthians 12:2-4, Revelation 2:7 and Revelation 22:2 teach that “paradise” and “heaven” are the same. The Society admits these verses teach “a heavenly paradise” but says the reference to “paradise” in Luke 23:43 refers to the later conditions on earth during the Millennium. It is obvious that at the beginning of the new earth conditions will not be paradise-like since the world system will have been completely destroyed at Armageddon. So paradise, according to the Watchtower Society, will not occur until after maybe six or seven hundred years of hard manual labor building it. This is what a Witness admitted to me once after I went through the questions I have presented below.

My Meetings with A Jehovah’s Witness Couple – Part 1

What does the Bible really teach? As some of you may know, I met a Jehovah’s Witness couple a few weeks ago at the local Memorial meeting in Carlisle.

They are a husband and wife which is good as I hope that they might discuss together anything we speak about that makes them question the WT org.

I met with them last week and we just had a short chat about how they became JWs and why. I told them a little about myself and I agreed that they could come back to go through the Watchtower book “What Does the Bible Really Teach”
